St. Mary's receives $600,000 for research on delirium in older patients
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) has received two research grants to fund specific projects in the prevention and management of delirium in the elderly. Delirium, also referred to as “acute confusion”, is frequent in older patients, both in hospitals and in long-term care facilities. The research grants awarded to SMHC will improve the knowledge about the prevalence and risk factors of delirium, as well as what influences the recovery from delirium. Dr. Antonia Arnaert will be interviewed during CBC's radio program, Daybreak, on Thursday, February 25 @ 7:40am. Set your radio dial to 88.5 FM to learn about the high-tech research Dr. Arnaert is doing in telehealth and how her innovative work in tele-oncology is drawing attention amongst experts in the treatment of cancer across the country. This telehealth research project places St. Mary's at the cutting-edge of technology and will eventually allow our patients to benefit from an innovative, real-time, follow-up program. Fully funded by St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, the telehealth project, which is already in its third year, supports the research areas that are consistent with the Hospital's teaching and clinical research mission.

The heart exposed – Dr. Roy and Dr. Walker in the News
Dr. Roy and Dr. Walker will be featured in the News this evening and in the coming days as they mark Heart month. They will explain, based on selected human heart specimens, how bad habits can have a negative impact on our heart health and how to stay in good shape. New accreditation for the Research Ethics Committee of St. Mary's Hospital Center
The Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux (MSSS) has recognized the outstanding quality of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of St. Mary's Hospital Center by granting it the ability to review, approve, and monitor projects involving minors and incompetent adults. This new accreditation further fortifies the University-affiliated Hospital Centre (CHAU) status of the Hospital and boosts new research projects. Read the press release published by the Hospital.
St. Mary’s Hospital and McGill take positive action towards the development of Family Medicine in Quebec
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) strengthened its proficiency and its reputation of excellence in family medicine by welcoming the first McGill Chair in Family and Community Medicine Research, to be based at the SMHC. The chair-holder is Dr. Jeannie Haggerty, an international expert in the evaluation of health care services; she took up her new position at SMHC on January 4th, 2010. Telehealth: a tool for the future being developed at St Mary’s
The innovative work of Dr Arnaert in tele-oncology is drawing attention amongst experts in the treatment of cancer across the country. The high-tech research in telehealth of Dr. Antonia Arnaert, from McGill University and St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC), was selected from among numerous submissions to be presented during the first national symposium entitled “Optimizing the Cancer Workforce” organized by the Canadian Partnership against Cancer. Press conference on the training of foreign doctors
The press conference that took place this morning, in the presence of the Ministers Dr. Yves Bolduc - Minister of Health and Social Services - and Mme. Yolande James - Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities - has been a success. The Ministers presented the highlights of a report on the creation of a training program for foreign doctors, for which St. Mary's Hospital Centre will be one of the training centres. Being first born of 2010 is a yawn for Nayla (The Gazette)
New Year's good news has arrived at St. Mary's Hospital Center (SMHC) in the form of a 6 pound, 8 ounce baby girl born 6 seconds after midnight on January 1, 2010. Her name is Nayla and both the baby and her mother, Lynn Knoepfel, are doing well. The mother and the proud father, Marc-Antoine Zora, are from Montreal. Read more...
St. Mary’s Doctor will Carry the Olympic Torch on Monday
Dr. Louis-Michel Elie, psychogeriatrician in the Department of Mental Health of St. Mary’s Hospital Center, will be part of a group of 20 doctors who will carry the Olympic torch on December 14, at 1 p.m., at a ceremony in Cornwall, Ontario. Dr. Elie describes carrying the Olympic torch as “…a unique opportunity. As a physician and a Canadian, it is a way for me to associate Olympic values with physical activity, which is important for both physical and mental health.” See Dr. Elie live by visiting Vancouver 2010 Olympic Torch Relay on the CTV.CA website. Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide – Hot Topics Covered by Dr. Pereira
As the recipient of the 2009 Helene DeRouin Renaud Educational Series in Palliative Care, Dr. José Luis Pereira shared his experience with over 100 people who attended the conference, including health professionals and the public. Dr. Pereira highlighted the ambiguity in just defining euthanasia and assisted suicide. He expressed his grave concerns over legalizing assisted suicide since foolproof safeguards are not possible. He further emphasized the need to respond by improving care, not terminating it. The successful conference held on November 5th concluded with a thought provoking discussion on this emotional but important topic.

We invite everyone to attend the presentation by Dr. Pereira who is widely published in international peer-reviewed journals and text books.
Dr. José Luis Pereira, MBChB, DA, CCFP, MSc (MEd), is the Head and Full Professor of the Division of Palliative Care at the University of Ottawa and Medical Chief of the Palliative Care programs at Bruyère Continuing Care and The Ottawa Hospital in Ottawa.
