Taking a Swing at Cancer: the Gayle Hutchison Golf Tournament

St. Marys Hospital Foundation now Members of the Ethical Code Program

St. Marys Hospital Foundation is very pleased to announe that we are now a member of Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program.
Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code is a set of standards for charitable organizations. By adhering to these standards, charities are complying with generally accepted practices for soliciting and managing donor dollars. This is important because, as a donor, you are entitled to transparency and the greatest impact possible for your investment. Read the MacLeans Supplement, July 2010.
2010 C.A.R.E. COMPETITION @ St. Mary's Hospital Center
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) and Foundation are very pleased to announce the 2010 C.A.R.E. Competition - which provides funding for pilot research projects. These projects contribute towards the development of research excellence at SMHC, resulting in an increased amount of external research funding received by the Hospital, and peer-reviewed publications. Applications for pilot projects are invited in clinical epidemiology and health services research that are consistent with the research mission of SMHC. Each pilot project may cover a period of up to 1 year. Click here for more information.
St. Mary's Auxiliary Gifts $200,000 towards the purchase of an ultrasound for the Maternal/Child Department

| It is with tireless effort and endless hours of hard work that the Auxiliary raises funds for the Hospital through various social events such as the Fashion Show, Spring Bridge, Daffodil Day, Heart Fund Campaign and Jingle Bell Fair. These dedicated volunteers also operate the Gift Shop, Book Corner, St. Mary’s Café and the vending machines in the Hospital. This year, the Auxiliary made another generous and impressive contribution of $200,000 which will go towards the purchase of an ultrasound for the Maternal/Child team. |

24 Hours of Science at St. Mary's Hospital Center (The Gazette)
In collaboration with 24 hours of science, and under the guidance of Dr. Indrojit Roy, Director of Pathology at St. Mary's Hospital Center (SMHC), members of our community were presented the unique opportunity to take a journey through the human body, from the organ to the cellular level. Participants in the event included teachers and students from James Lyng High School, our own SMHC staff and the general public. The students also participated in an interactive game that involved reconstructing the digestive system organs on a teaching mannequin. Read the article published in The Gazette (view the PDF).
Bilodeau's guitar a welcome sound for dialysis patients (CTV)
The CTV show "The Power of One" aired a story about Marguerite Bilodeau, a St. Mary's volunteer in recreational therapy who cheers up the hemodialysis patients. Her talents as a guitarist and a singer help to make the long duration of each dialysis treatment seem shorter and much more pleasant. Click here to view the CTV report.

“PREMED: The Musical” (March 24-25)
Diagnosis: PMS - PreMed Syndrome
Alexandra Markus, a St. Mary’s Hospital volunteer and Marianopolis student, is a budding playwright, whose first production, PREMED: The Musical, will be shown March 24 and 25, 2010 @ 7:30 pm at Marianopolis College. The play, a satirical musical, focuses on four second-year CEGEP students who share an obsessive desire to get into McGill’s renowned PreMed program – and would do anything to get there!
The musical is already getting lots of attention, including being featured in the March 9th edition of The Gazette (PDF file available). To purchase tickets ($5 each) or for more information, please contact Alexandra Markus at premed.the.musical@gmail.com. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to St. Mary’s Hospital Center.
St. Mary's sensitizes high school students about cardiovascular health (CBC, CTV)
As CBC TV’s news report indicated, “St. Mary’s is a hospital with heart.” In recognition of February’s Heart month, St. Mary’s physicians Dr. Indrojit Roy, Director of the division of Pathology and Dr. Mathieu Walker, Cardiologist, gave high school students from Lauren Hill Academy a first hand look at what poor life style choices can do to the human heart. Doctors Roy and Walker were part of St. Mary’s media event called "The Heart Exposed", an initiative to sensitize our community about cardiovascular health. Click here to view the CTV news report.
St. Mary's receives $600,000 for research on delirium in older patients
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) has received two research grants to fund specific projects in the prevention and management of delirium in the elderly. Delirium, also referred to as “acute confusion”, is frequent in older patients, both in hospitals and in long-term care facilities. The research grants awarded to SMHC will improve the knowledge about the prevalence and risk factors of delirium, as well as what influences the recovery from delirium. Dr. Antonia Arnaert will be interviewed during CBC's radio program, Daybreak, on Thursday, February 25 @ 7:40am. Set your radio dial to 88.5 FM to learn about the high-tech research Dr. Arnaert is doing in telehealth and how her innovative work in tele-oncology is drawing attention amongst experts in the treatment of cancer across the country. This telehealth research project places St. Mary's at the cutting-edge of technology and will eventually allow our patients to benefit from an innovative, real-time, follow-up program. Fully funded by St. Mary's Hospital Foundation, the telehealth project, which is already in its third year, supports the research areas that are consistent with the Hospital's teaching and clinical research mission.

The heart exposed – Dr. Roy and Dr. Walker in the News
Dr. Roy and Dr. Walker will be featured in the News this evening and in the coming days as they mark Heart month. They will explain, based on selected human heart specimens, how bad habits can have a negative impact on our heart health and how to stay in good shape. Tune in tonight to CTV (between 6 and 7pm) and CBC (between 5:30 and 6:30pm). New accreditation for the Research Ethics Committee of St. Mary's Hospital Center
The Ministère de la santé et des services sociaux (MSSS) has recognized the outstanding quality of the Research Ethics Committee (REC) of St. Mary's Hospital Center by granting it the ability to review, approve, and monitor projects involving minors and incompetent adults. This new accreditation further fortifies the University-affiliated Hospital Centre (CHAU) status of the Hospital and boosts new research projects. Read the press release published by the Hospital.
St. Mary’s Hospital and McGill take positive action towards the development of Family Medicine in Quebec
St. Mary’s Hospital Center (SMHC) strengthened its proficiency and its reputation of excellence in family medicine by welcoming the first McGill Chair in Family and Community Medicine Research, to be based at the SMHC. The chair-holder is Dr. Jeannie Haggerty, an international expert in the evaluation of health care services; she took up her new position at SMHC on January 4th, 2010. Dr. Haggerty is also an Associate Professor of Family Medicine at McGill University’s Faculty of Medicine. Read the press release...
