Commemorating the 15th Edition of Girls for the Cure, the Girls for the Cure Student Scholarship Program was launched offering the young women of the participating schools the opportunity to develop projects focused on philanthropy, volunteerism and education. Taking action and making a difference in their communities is at the very essence of Girls for the Cure. St. Mary’s Hospital is pleased to support the passion, drive and dedication of today’s young women through this student scholarship.
Announcing the 2010 awardees of the inaugural Girls for the Cure Student Scholarship
Sofia Essayan-Perez, The Study ‘11
Sofia was awarded funding to establish a high school Science Lab in rural Dirai, Nicaragua. Sofia is changing the face of education for generations of children to come. By providing an entire community with this invaluable resource and learning experience, Sofia is taking action and making a difference through her dedication and courage. Sofia will be mentored by St. Mary’s very own Dr. Indroijt Roy, Chief, Pathology.
Jenna Omassi, Trafalgar School for Girls ‘10
Jenna was awarded funding for her project to establish a soccer coach’s training camp in Khayelitsha, South Africa. This project will give 20 individuals the training they need to pursue striving careers, support their families and become community leaders amongst their peers. Jenna is changing the lives of the women, men and children of Khayelitsha through her determination and action. Jenna will be mentored by St. Mary’s very own Dr. Susan Law, VP, Academic Affairs.
The funding for this student scholarship was generously provided by the estate of the late Cheryl Irving, who was an inspiration and hero to us all throughout her battle with cancer.
