Girls for the Cure 2011

More than $110,000 raised for women-related cancer treatment

On September 22, 2011, filled with energy and enthusiasm, 2,300 students from six private girls’ schools in Montreal laced up their walking shoes and embarked on a 5-km journey, making their way to the summit of Mont Royal.

They were greeted at the top of the mountain by CTV spokesperson Aphrodite Salas, Virgin Radio hosts Cousin Vinnie and Lisa Player, and DJs Mike and Stu Ryder from Superior Sound.

The skies may have been grey, but the sea of yellow t-shirts brightened up the day and, for one hour, the GIRLS sang, danced and celebrated the power of their collective voices. The girls welcomed two cancer survivors - Shannon Macrae and Brenda McAllister – to share their personal journeys in facing this disease.

Fellow Girls for the Cure alumni, Jenna Omassi, also shared her experience in receiving the Girls for the Cure scholarship and the difference it enabled her to make in the lives of women in South Africa.

Over the past 16 years, the Girls for the Cure participants have walked more than a quarter of a million kilometers with one goal at heart: finding a cure for women-related cancers. Their dedication, courage and spirit in pursuing this goal have greatly contributed to raising the awareness of the toll cancer takes on the health and wellness of women in our community.

Through their fundraising efforts, the 2011 Girls for the Cure raised more than $110,000 for female-related cancer treatments and services at St. Mary’s Hospital Center. To date, the Girls for the Cure have contributed close to $2,000,000 towards this very worthy cause. ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!

Cynda Heward, President and CEO of St. Mary's Hospital Foundation cheers on as the                                    amount of funds raised is unveiled.
