Ethics and Accountability

St. Marys Hospital Foundation is very pleased to announce that we are now a member of Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code Program.

Imagine Canada’s Ethical Code is a set of standards for charitable organizations. By adhering to these standards, charities are complying with generally accepted practices for soliciting and managing donor dollars. This is important because, as a donor, you are entitled to transparency and the greatest impact possible for your investment. Read the MacLeans Supplement, July 2010.

Ethical Code Guide

Ethics in Fundraising is a paramount consideration, and whatever charity to which you ascribe should have in place firm guidelines for ethical practices – for the most trustworthy handling of your contribution, and for the most loyal adherence to the charity’s mission.

At St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation, we adhere to the Donor Bill of Rights – a longstanding and comprehensive document created through the cooperation of several key fundraising organizations to guide charities toward best practices, and to protect the best interests of our donors.

Additionally, our fundraising and management practices are governed by the Association of Fundraising Professional’s Code of Ethical Principles and Standards. Moreover, we adhere to the code of ethics outlined by Imagine Canada, formerly the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy. Click here to view the Ethical Fundraising and Financial Accountability Code.

The Investment Guidelines and Objectives of St. Mary’s Hospital Foundation outline the expectations of the Directors of the Foundation with regards to the investment management of the Foundation’s endowment fund.

This investment policy is designed to ensure that the assets of the Fund are invested in a prudent manner, in order to optimize long term returns at an appropriate level of risk for an overall portfolio in the context of the requirements of the Foundation.

Charitable giving is a very emotionally-imbued issue, and our professionals strive to consistently meet the highest standard of ethical practices.  It is therefore paramount that our donors feel confident that their heartfelt participation in the future of St. Mary’s is being handled ethically, professionally, and in the very best interests of both the donor and the Hospital.

As a valued member of St. Mary’s family, you have a right to know what these guidelines are and exactly how your contributions are being handled.
